“Consider Your Assumptions”

Jobe Martin is a Dentist (University of Pittsburgh 1966) and a former faculty member of Baylor University. He is a former Evolutionist, but now is a leading speaker and author for Creation. He has a DVD series entitled “Incredible Creatures That Defy Evolution.” I highly recommend it.

I was listening to one of his tapes and he described his conversion. While teaching at Baylor University, a student politely asked him about Creation vs. Evolution. Dr. Martin had never deeply studied the subject, but quickly told the student he was an Evolutionist. This was due to the fact that it was all he was ever taught, and he never saw a need to question the subject.

The student asked a question that is very beneficial for witnessing. I think it will help you. When the student found out Dr. Martin believed in the theory of evolution, the student asked a question that stunned Dr. Martin – the student asked:

“Have you considered your assumptions?”

Dr. Martin said the question stunned him because he had never considered all of the assumptions he was making in believing the theory of evolution to be true. He just assumed it was true and that was that. The student discussed some assumptions required in believing in the theory of evolution and Dr. Martin was by no means “converted” to believing Creation is true…that occurred five years later…but it was the beginning of Dr. Martin realizing he had to accept some pretty fantastic assumptions to believe the Theory of Evolution is true.

HOW I USED THIS TECHNIQUE THIS WEEK

This week at work I met a polite, intelligent person who is a new hire. We were driving to a job site when the following conversation occurred:

Me: “Where did you go to school?”

He: “I got my B.S. at UCI and my masters at UC Santa Barbara.”

Me: “Oh, I have spent some time at both schools….they are good schools.”

He: “What did you do there?”

Me: “At UCI I got to moderate a debate on Creation vs. Evolution. That was fun. What is your opinion on the topic?”

He: “Well I was raised Catholic, but I really love science, so I take the science side.”

Me: “Me too! I love science and I take the side of science too!”
He: “That’s cool.”

Me: “Yeah I believe in Creation.”

He was surprised. During later discussion he said he met many people who believed in Creation, but never one who justified it with science. However, in the mean time, I told him I felt that science supported Creation.

He: “So you don’t believe in Evolution?”

Me: “That could be a trick question. Do you mean do I believe humans have bacteria ancestors? Absolutely not.”

He: “Isn’t that Evolution?”

Me: “Not really. The word Evolution means change. Changes happen all the time….people get taller, you can breed dogs, bacteria mutates…..but people make people, dogs make dogs and bacteria makes…………………………”

He: “Bacteria?”

Me: “Correct. But the Theory of Evolution believes humans have bacteria ancestors…..do you believe that?”

He: “I guess so.”

Me: “Have you considered the assumptions required in believing that?”

He: “What do you mean?”

Me: “Do you know how many miles of blood vessels are in the human body.”

He: “A lot…I am not sure how many.”

Me: “Sixty thousand miles. That is enough to circle the earth two and a half times… have you considered the assumptions required to believe 60,000 miles of blood vessels happened due to mutations?

Me: “Think of your assumptions….did these 60,000 miles evolve an inch at a time…a mile at a time or all at once? Creation believes it was instantly designed. But let me ask you a question ok?”

He: “Sure.”

Me: “I asked this to the author of an article on the evolution of the heart….I asked him: “which evolved first…the heart….blood or veins…..guess what he said?”

He: “What did he say?”

Me: “He said “they all appeared in an evolutionary flash….” I asked him what that was….he said all at once…I asked him if that was creation and he said absolutely not.”

Me: “What do you think evolved first? Hearts, blood or veins?”

He: Grunt….”I dunno.”

Me: “See some of the assumptions you need to believe in the Theory of Evolution? There really are thousands of assumptions you have to make. For example, the heart, blood and veins are worthless unless there is a nervous system, a skeletal system, an immune system….etc. etc. etc.”

In a nutshell, here are some more huge assumptions an Evolutionist must accept.

Me: “Suppose non living chemicals could arrange themselves by chance, and get the right energy by chance, and form a living cell by chance…what three things do you have to assume that the first living cell was able to do in order for the theory of evolution to have occurred?

He gave some good answers….he said reproduce then with prodding he came up with metabolize (humans call it eating, plants call it photosynthesis) and mutate to the point of making other organisms that could survive. Think! What huge assumptions evolutionists believe...first off life could not happen by chance but if you assume it did, then you assume the life could reproduce (incredibly complex chemical processes independent of being alive) metabolize ……(incredibly complex chemical processes independent of being alive) and mutate into different organisms (a biochemical process that has never been observed).

We had a nice polite talk. My final point was that creationists believe in instant people. Instant male, instant female, with livers, kidneys, stomachs, the right reproduction stuff and where they appeared there was the right temperature, the right food and the right gravity waiting for them. I added Adam and Eve was what I believed, and that the first humans had to be adults because……..human babies are so helpless! I felt the first bears, cats, and whales were all adults to take good care of their young.

He confirmed belief in the theory of evolution required a lot of big assumptions, and then, not surprisingly, the talk went away from Creation vs. Evolution to: 1) what about the people who never hear of Jesus? 2) What about other religions? 3) What about hell? 4) Who made God etc. I could address all these but the newsletter would go on forever.

FINAL POINT: Teach evolutionists they have many enormous assumptions in their belief. They need to lose the smugness that comes from ignorance. In love, make them uncomfortable in realizing they assume 60,000 miles of blood vessels is the result of chance. They need to realize Evolutionism takes more faith to believe than Creation. Make them realize they make many assumptions in believing Evolutionism is true.
