Dr. Bolton Davidheiser (PhD in Zoology from Johns Hopkins) gave a fact filled presentation on the teachings of Dr. Hugh Ross. Dr. Ross is a popular lecturer and author on the existence of God. However, many people feel his explanations are contrary to Biblical teaching, Dr. Davidheiser (and nearly everyone I know in our group) thinks so too.

{The following points by Dr. Ross are from his two page paper "Genesis One, Dinosaurs and Cavemen" His teachings are in italics}

Dr. Ross teaches: 1) God suddenly spoke all the galaxies, stars and planets into existence. {However, Dr. Ross teaches God used the Big Bang 15 billion years ago to create hydrogen, and over many billions of years, many stars and planets formed; this is not the six sequential days that is taught in Genesis}.

2) God made a cloud to block the sun from reaching earth for billions of years {Gen 1:10-19 clearly teaches the earth was created before the sun. Dr. Ross disagrees and thus invents a mystery cloud}.

3) After a while, God broke up the clouds "allowing the sun, moon and stars to be seen," (Seen by whom? people were not even created yet. This sounds like the old phrase: if a tree falls in a forest does it make a sound?).

4) God’s first "Creatures were small and soft," "then came small animals with shells," "fish and amphibians were next," "then came the reptiles," then "more than 100 million years ago God created dinosaurs," but a "major disaster...about 60 million years ago (wiped) out nearly all the dinosaur species." "After the dinosaurs, God created birds and mammals." Dr. Ross continues: "Starting about 2 to 4 million years ago, God began to create man-like mammals or hominids ..however.. ..they had no spirit...in time, all these man-like creatures went extinct. Then about 10 to 25 thousand years ago, God replaced them with Adam and Eve."

Comment: Is this what Genesis teaches? The contradictions are obvious. Genesis 1:25 teaches all land animals were created on the same day ("evening and morning" teaches they were 24 hour type days). Dr. Ross’ scenario has a lot of death and suffering before sin entered the world; the Bible teaches death and suffering entered this Creation due to man’s sin (Romans 5:12, 1 Corinthians 15:21). He also rearranges the easy to understand Creation week in Genesis 1. The Bible teaches that there was first light and waters, then the waters were separated, then dry land appeared forming the earth, THEN the sun, moon and stars; then birds flying and sea life, then land animals.

I do not doubt Dr. Ross is a friendly man or that he loves the Lord. I think he desires to lead his peers to the Lord, and thus will twist Bible verses that may be stumbling blocks to his colleagues. I think a literal Genesis embarrasses him. The apostle Paul was not embarrassed by the Bible, Romans 1:16 states "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ." Lets see what Christ taught.

DID JESUS TEACH ABOUT THE LENGTH OF CREATION??

Before we answer this, ask yourself if you would believe Jesus’ teachings on creation.

Read Mark 10:6..."But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female." (Memorize this verse!!!)

Now, Dr. Ross believes God created the Universe about 15 billion years ago, and made humans 25,000 years ago. That, is not at the beginning of creation! Young earth creationists believe the world is about 6000 years old, and that God created people about 6000 years ago, which is what Jesus’ own words said. So the question for you is this....are you going to believe Jesus or Dr. Hugh Ross?
